Capacity-building and Sustainable Development
Capacity-building and Sustainable Development
Professor Durga D. Poudel, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Louisiana, USA, published a pioneering article on Asta-Ja in 2008 "Management of "Eight-Ja" for Economic Development in Nepal" in Journal of Comparative International Management, 11(1): 1-13, proposing a theoretical framework for accelerated economic growth and socio-economic transformation in Nepal. The Eight "Ja" referred as "Asta-Ja" in Nepali language, means eight of the Nepali letter "Ja" - Jal (water), Jamin (land), Jungle (forest), Jadibuti (medicinal and aromatic plants), Janashakti (human resource), Janawar (animals), Jarajuri (crop plants), and Jalabayu (climate). Professor Poudel has published over a dozen refereed journal articles on Asta-Ja in the past seventeen years, elucidating Asta-Ja principles, strategies, guidelines, and approaches to sustainable conservation, development, and utilization of natural and human resources for accelerated economic growth, fast-paced socio-economic transformation, and overall security in Nepal. Synthesizing his published research articles on Asta-Ja, Professor Poudel published a book, "Asta-Ja for Prosperity, Pride, and National Integrity" in 2024, which is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
The value and the utilities of the Asta-Ja Framework on Nepal's sustainable economic development were well-recognized by various scholars, governmental organizations, NGOs, academicians, developers, and other stakeholders immediately after the publication of the pioneering article on Asta-Ja in 2008. Accordingly, non-profit organizations and co-ops were established in Nepal for the implementation of the Asta-Ja Framework for the self-reliant development of the country. Some of these organizations include the Asta-Ja Abhiyan Nepal in 2008, Asta-Ja Saving and Credit Cooperative Limited in Kathmandu in 2011, Asta-Ja Research and Development Center (Asta-Ja RDC), Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2014, and Asta-Ja USA in Hawaii, USA, in 2018. Asta-Ja International Coordination Council (Asta-Ja ICC) was established in 2008. Asta-Ja International Coordination Council (Asta-Ja ICC) is a common platform of Asta-Ja affiliates who are highly enthusiastic and committed to the socio-economic development of Nepal. This is certainly the first network of its kind in the history of Nepal. This network includes highly accomplished scientists, academicians, businessmen, medical doctors, engineers, computer scientists, graduate students, administrators, IT professionals, service providers, researchers, and other professionals.
To bring various national and international organizations and platforms associated with Asta-Ja Framework under a common umbrella, we establish this common platform of ASTA-JA GLOBAL. Our goal is to develop partnerships with research and developmental institutions, governmental agencies, community organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders and work collaboratively in agricultural, natural resources, environmental, and other research and developmental projects. We strive for community capacity-building, gender/ethnic equity, social justice, innovations, and solutions to the nation's agricultural, natural resources, and environmental problems and management challenges. We are well-connected to grassroots communities, governmental agencies, and policy-making bodies. We envision an economically prosperous, environmentally sound, and socially just Nepal through the sustainable development and management of Asta-Ja resources. We strive for grassroots-based, participatory, comprehensive, and collaborative agricultural and natural resources research and development for poverty alleviation and socio-economic transformation of the nation. We will work to help farmers, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders in developing sustainable commercialized agriculture in Nepal. We strive to enhance environmental quality through the framework of Asta-Ja.
We work very efficiently, cordially, and collaboratively with our local communities, research and development institutions, district and central level governmental agencies, international donor agencies, NGOs, INGOs, business communities and other stakeholders in agricultural, natural resources, and environmental projects and community capacity-building. We deliver outstanding results in record time.
